In recognition of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, the Winthrop Library will collaborate with the Shafer Museum and Friends of the Winthrop Library (FOWL) to host a community-centered literary and cultural program reflecting on American identity, history, and civic life.
The cornerstone of this program will be a book talk featuring Saving the American Dream: Meditations for Dark Times by John K. Roth, held on Friday, July 3rd from 5:00–6:00 PM at the library. This event will invite attendees to engage in thoughtful discussion around themes of democracy, national identity, and the challenges and possibilities facing the United States today. Following the talk, FOWL will host an informal after-event gathering in the community room, offering space for continued conversation and connection among attendees.
To enrich the experience, the Shafer Museum will curate a small display installation in the library foyer/community hallway, highlighting regional history and perspectives that connect local stories to the broader American narrative.
The library will complement the event with:
A themed book display featuring titles related to American history, civic engagement, and cultural identity
A curated reader’s advisory list available in print and online for patrons interested in exploring these topics further
A special “America”-themed Story Time at 11:00 AM earlier that day, designed to engage younger audiences with age-appropriate stories and activities centered on national themes
