The Twisp Valley Grange hosts its ‘Potluck with a Purpose’ on Wednesday, 23 September. Come share food, community and knowledge.
This month’s program is “Bean to Bonbon: cacao bean’s transformation to chocolate”. Please join local chocolatier Mary Jane Perry to learn about chocolate. She’ll start with Theobroma cacao, the tree that produces cacao beans. Theobromatranslates from the Greek to ‘food of the gods’ and cacao is derived from the indigenous word for cacao. Learn about where T. cacao originated, how cacao pods grow, the first documented use of the cacao bean by the Olmecs in Mesoamerica 3800 years ago, and all the steps involved in processing cacao beans to cocoa powder and chocolate. She’ll explain tempering and how she makes artisan bonbons.
Please bring your questions and food to share. Water, glasses, plates, silverware, napkins provided.
Doors open at 5:30 pm, potluck at 6:00 pm, and program at 6:20 pm. More information at twispvalleygrange.org
